The classic debate between carpet and hardwood may never end with the popularity of hardwood continuing to increase. However, you shouldn’t be too quick to disregard carpet as the perfect flooring for your bedroom and here are four reasons why:

Accidents can happen. Hardwood compared to carpet can be slippery and hard if you fall. For young children, who are prone to falling or rolling out of bed, carpet is definitely the way to go. A benefit of carpet is a softer landing area. For babies who are learning to crawl and walk, carpet will be much softer under their knees and provide a more forgiving crash landing. Carpet is also a good choice for seniors. Look for a short cut pile carpet no thicker than 1/4-inch pile height. The padding underneath should also be as thin as possible. If there is high traffic in the area or a wheelchair is in use it is recommended a commercial grade carpet be used.

Air quality in the bedroom is particularly important for individuals with asthma or allergies. There are a number of studies that show carpet reduces the number of allergens in the air compared to hard surface flooring. This is because carpet is able to trap allergens in the fibers of the carpet before they go airborne. Carpet keeps allergens out of the air and therefore your lungs. Vacuuming often completely removes the trapped allergens.
