5 Home Renovation Myths Debunked

By , On , In Renovations

No matter the size of the project, home renovations can be overwhelming. That is why it is important to properly plan and prepare. But do not worry, that brand new dream kitchen or beautiful new upgraded flooring is worth it in the end. To ensure you are spending your time and money wisely, we are sharing 5 common project myths.

1. Doing It Yourself Will Save You Money

Unless you yourself are a licensed professional or it is a smaller project, we suggest hiring the right people as you will save yourself time and money. Do you know what tools and other materials are needed to complete the project? If not, you could find yourself having to make several trips to your local home improvement store.

Additionally, a professional knows how to install the products properly. If you install it yourself, it could take you several attempts to install it correctly. This may also lead to higher material costs and extend the time it takes if you have to redo it. Also, especially with flooring, installation is key to long lasting floor. If you do it yourself incorrectly, it could cost you more money in the long run by having to replace your flooring sooner than expected and you may void your warranty.

2. Your Project Can Be Completed in a Weekend

Yes, this may be true for some small projects, like a small backsplash upgrade, but the last thing you want to do with any renovation is rush the process. You want to make sure you allocate enough time so you are happy with your selection and most importantly the final outcome. Most times and depending on the material you choose, it takes longer than 48 hours to select, prep and install a product. Solid hardwood for instance needs to acclimate to your home before it is installed, and that process can take up to 7 days.

3. It Costs Less to Repair Than to Replace

Although we believe in reducing, re-using and recycling, we also have to think about the effect on our wallets. In some circumstances it is cheaper to replace an item than it is to try and repair it. If you are unsure, do a quick cost analysis and if the cost to replace is cheaper, then get rid of the old. The long-term effect of repairing could be more costly and cause more damage if the repair wasn’t completed properly.

4. No Need to Get Permits

Always check with your city’s code and regulations before starting a renovation project – you might be surprised by the types of projects the require a permit. If you require a permit for the type of work being completed and you do not have one, again it could be more costly as you could be fined.
