Does luxury vinyl suit your room and lifestyle?
Choosing luxury vinyl.

Luxury vinyl is currently the fastest growing flooring category  on the market. This flooring category is designed to replicate the timeless look of ceramic, natural stone or wood  but at the same time is a very durable and comfortable surface for everyday living. Luxury vinyl flooring is available in a beautiful collection of colours and designs from traditional to modern to country. It is thicker than traditional vinyl and is so advanced using 3D and 4D printing technology that it can now offer very real visuals for wood, ceramic or stone, at a lower cost.

Luxury vinyl tile can be installed with or without grout for a convincing  stone or ceramic look. Some examples of tile sizes would be 12″ x 12″, 12″ x 24″ or 16″ x 16″.  You can even choose what is called a “mixed kit” which provides tiles in 3 different size formats, ie 8 tiles of each size: 16″ x 16″, 8″ x 8″, & 8″ x 16″ which creates a beautiful sophisticated floor design.

Luxury vinyl plank replicates the look of hardwood and is available in a multitude of plank lengths and widths, featuring bevelled edges and ends. Some examples of plank sizes would be 3″ x 36″ / 7″ x 36″ / 6″ x 48″ / 4.5″ x 48″ / 4″ x 36″. With today’s technology, these planks re-create the subtle textures found in wood grains and stone grooves, making them look like the real thing.

Luxury vinyl is water resistant making it the ideal choice for kitchens, bathrooms, mudrooms  or laundry rooms. A great choice for busy households with kids and pets or if you are looking for a low maintenance, high performing flooring option that looks beautiful.

Benefits of luxury vinyl.

Easy to install/maintain.

High moisture and humidity resistance.

Perfect for high traffic areas in your home as it is water and stain resistant.

Can be installed below, on or above grade.

Can be installed over some types of existing floors or subfloors.

A great alternative for condo owners who do not want to install hardwood due to cost, or who may be prevented from this by HOA covenants.

Things to think about when buying luxury vinyl.

Luxury vinyl looks beautiful providing warmth and comfort, sound dampening, and is extremely durable and is easy to maintain.

Luxury vinyl is the perfect choice for those high traffic areas in your home providing the look of wood, tile or stone with all the benefits of vinyl.

While luxury vinyl looks like tile, stone, slate or hardwood, it’s not and may not bring the same value to your home in resale as tile or wood might.

Because luxury vinyl tile is softer than “real” tile, stone or slate, it may scratch more easily.  But this is a compromise for the warmth of the product compared to tile.

Luxury Vinyl is easy to install.

Does "thickness" matter when buying luxury vinyl?

Thickness in luxury vinyl flooring is not always an indication of better quality.

Focus on the layer, called the WEAR LAYER which is responsible for taking on the daily wear and tear of the floor. You will want a thick wear layer as this will determine how your floor will hold up to scuffing, scratches and stains. Usually, the thicker the layer, the more expensive the floor but also the longer the warranty and quite simply the longevity of the floor. Wear layer thickness is measured in mils (the thickness of a mil is about the same as a page in the telephone book).

Wear layers are typically 6 to 20 mil, but some offer up to a 40 mil layer.

Luxury vinyl pros and cons.

Luxury vinyl is a beautiful but heavy duty vinyl floor available in tile or plank format. Using advanced photographic technologies, luxury vinyl does an exceptional job at emulating wood, tile, stone and slate.

PROS of luxury vinyl flooring

  • Water resistant/water proof.
  • Long lasting.
  • Easy to maintain.
  • Stands up better to pets.
  • Less noisy when walking on luxury vinyl vs other hard surface flooring options.
  • Many sizes, colour and style choices.
  • No pad or underlayment needed for installation.
  • Great flooring choice if you have pets.

CONS of luxury vinyl flooring

  • As it is not actually “real wood or tile”, it may not bring the same value to your home in resale as wood, tile or slate might.
  • In the case of luxury vinyl tile, that replicates ceramic, stone or slate, as it is softer, it may scratch more easily.

What is the difference between sheet vinyl and luxury vinyl?

When you hear the words “Sheet Vinyl Flooring” you probably picture the sheets or rolls of vinyl flooring that have been around for ages. Sheet vinyl has become an attractive option in flooring due to it’s durability and cost effectiveness. As flooring options have grown and evolved so has the world of “Vinyl”. There is a “new kid on the block” and it’s called “Luxury Vinyl” which is available in tile or plank format, also referred to as  LVT or LVP.

Luxury vinyl is a premium vinyl product. Using advanced photographic technologies, luxury vinyl does an excellent job of simulating the look of wood, natural stone, slate and ceramic tile, but as its vinyl, it provides a comfortable surface and excellent durability.  Many of the Luxury Vinyl Tile products can be installed with or without grout, mimicking a true tile appearance.

The luxury vinyl buying process.

Visit our showroom and our sales associates will help you select the perfect flooring for your home. Bring swatches of furniture fabrics, draperies, bedspreads, wallpaper and paint that will remain in the room. You will probably want to bring samples home with you to see how it looks in your décor.

Before you visit us, consider drawing a simple outline of the room indicating:

  • Room Exits – are there any exits to the outside?  Are there patio doors?
  • Adjoining room floors – what types of flooring will flow into this room?  What are the colours?
  • Sunlight and other lighting – how much natural light comes in during the day, from what direction?
  • Rough measurement – measure the length and width of the room – include closets.

Our sales associates may ask you:

  • Is there light or heavy traffic in this room?
  • What is the room used for?
  • Do you want a casual, formal or somewhere in between look?
  • Do you have children or pets?
  • Do you have a certain colour in mind?
  • Is there a style you’ve owned or seen that you really like?

Nufloors will provide a free in home measure/estimate. We will determine exactly how much flooring you will need to buy and will determine the layout of the flooring in the room, where the seams will be placed (if applicable), and will review pattern matches if applicable. At this time, we will determine if your sub-floor is structurally sound or if repairs / replacement will be required.

If you decide to purchase from us (and we hope that you will!) we will schedule the installation and will prepare you for what to expect on installation day, such as who removes the old flooring, who moves the furniture and electronics, etc., who handles the door trimming (if required), will it be necessary to remove the moldings? Our installers are skilled, but not in electrical or plumbing work. They may be able to help with moving appliances but will not be able to disconnect/reconnect gas, water or direct-wired appliances.
