Does laminate suit your room and lifestyle?
Choosing laminate.

Laminate is a wonderful choice for homeowners if you are looking for a durable floor that is easy to maintain and affordable. Today’s laminate floors are produced with such realistic visuals (photographic images rather than a physical layer of wood, tile or stone) that it can be difficult to tell if it is laminate, hardwood, tile or stone.

Laminate floors can be installed in almost any room in your home including over dry concrete, wooden subfloors and many types of existing floor coverings.

Things to think about when buying laminate.

Underlay must be used when installing laminate flooring as it helps soundproof the floor, protects the floor from moisture and adds warmth.

Laminate is a wood by-product. It will retain and give off moisture. Temperature, moisture and humidity all affect laminates. Ideally your home should always be between 35% to 55% humidity.

Homeowners today prefer a wide plank look for laminates and hardwoods.

In laminate flooring, pre-designed patterns that imitate the look of wood/tile or stone texture are imprinted onto the floor surface. For this reason, identical patterns are repeated on average every 5 boards. Therefore the uniqueness of an authentic floor is impossible to replicate.

The 10% rule, you will likely need to order 10% more flooring then the exact room measurement. This is due to the fact that the laminate will need to be cut to fit around a fireplace, bay window, stairs, or closet.

Does thickness matter?

There are various standard thickness levels for laminate flooring which are measured in millimetres – 7, 8, 10 and 12 mm.

For laminate flooring, plank thickness is measured in millimetres (mm). A millimetre is quite small, roughly 0.039 inches. There are advantages to a thicker board, for example a 12mm. It will feel more like solid wood when you walk on it as the 12 mm board’s thick inner core keeps the laminate stable and flat. The extra density of a thicker board will also help to dampen sound thus reducing the hollow/clicking sound when walking on it.

Thickness is not a guarantee of quality in laminate flooring as some thicker laminate floors can be manufactured with lower-
quality materials. We recommend that you buy a quality laminate floor from a reputable, knowledgeable dealer.

Laminate pros and cons.

Today’s laminate’s offer you a beautiful floor with charm and character. Nufloors provides you with everything you need to install and maintain your laminate flooring.

PROS of laminate flooring

  • Can be used in any location – on, above or below grade.
  • Is less expensive than traditional hardwood, stone or tile flooring.
  • Easy maintenance. Just use a vacuum or broom. Mop with a slightly damp mop. No floor waxing needed.
  • It is more dent and stain-resistant than solid or engineered hardwood flooring, making it a great choice for active households with young children or pets.
  • Click laminate floors can be replaced if damaged.
  • Pet friendly – 57% of Canadian households have a pet. If you’re one of them, laminate flooring might be an excellent choice.
  • Can be installed over some types of existing floors or subfloors but never install a floating floor over another floating floor.

CONS of laminate flooring

  • It is not a wood floor. There is a wood chip base layer in laminate but its not a wood floor.
  • It is a hard floor – unlike carpet or cork, laminate floors are hard underfoot.
  • Cannot be refinished – If a laminate floor is scratched or worn, it cannot be resanded/refinished like a solid hardwood floor can.
  • Lower resale value – A hardwood floor provides better value when selling your home.
  • Can be a little on the noisy side as it does not absorb sound well and can have a hollow sound when you walk on it. Using an acoustic underlay will help reduce the noise.

The laminate buying process.

Visit our showroom and our sales associates will help you select the perfect flooring for your home. Bring swatches of furniture fabrics, draperies, bedspreads, wallpaper and paint that will remain in the room. You will probably want to bring samples home with you to see how it looks in your décor.

Before you visit us, consider drawing a simple outline of the room indicating:

  • Room Exits – are there any exits to the outside?  Are there patio doors?
  • Adjoining room floors – what types of flooring will flow into this room?  What are the colours?
  • Sunlight and other lighting – how much natural light comes in during the day, from what direction?
  • Rough measurement – measure the length and width of the room – include closets.

Our sales associates may ask you:

  • Is there light or heavy traffic in this room?
  • What is the room used for?
  • Do you want a casual, formal or somewhere in between look?
  • Do you have children or pets?
  • Do you have a certain colour in mind?
  • Is there a style you’ve owned or seen that you really like?

Nufloors will provide a free in home measure/estimate. We will determine exactly how much flooring you will need to buy and will determine the layout of the flooring in the room, where the seams will be placed (if applicable), and will review pattern matches if applicable. At this time, we will determine if your sub-floor is structurally sound or if repairs / replacement will be required.

If you decide to purchase from us (and we hope that you will!) we will schedule the installation and will prepare you for what to expect on installation day, such as who removes the old flooring, who moves the furniture and electronics, etc., who handles the door trimming (if required), will it be necessary to remove the moldings? Our installers are skilled, but not in electrical or plumbing work. They may be able to help with moving appliances but will not be able to disconnect/reconnect gas, water or direct-wired appliances.
